This Sunday: Tongue Talk
James 3:1-12, Mark 8:27-38
How often have you opened your mouth and then regretted it later? Have you ever said, "If only I could control my tongue..."? James speaks firmly about the tongue, calling it a "fire" and insisting that "every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue--a restless evil, full of deadly poison." Mark recounts Jesus' words, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." How has the tongue become a fire and a deadly poison in the ways we speak to and about one another in our time? How might Jesus' words to those of us who want to follow him affect the words we choose and the way we speak and interact with one another?
